Interesting and sadly rather true.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, "Common Sense", who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; school playgrounds dismantled due to safety concerns, teens suspended from school for being around trouble makers yet not actually making trouble, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I Know My Rights&lt;br /&gt;I Want It Now&lt;br /&gt;Someone Else Is To Blame&lt;br /&gt;I'm A Victim&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3313253345104556892-994238431617828152?l=lifeandbusinessleadership.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://lifeandbusinessleadership.blogspot.com/feeds/994238431617828152/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://lifeandbusinessleadership.blogspot.com/2009/09/common-sense-is-now-not-common.html#comment-form' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/3313253345104556892/posts/default/994238431617828152'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/3313253345104556892/posts/default/994238431617828152'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lifeandbusinessleadership.blogspot.com/2009/09/common-sense-is-now-not-common.html' title='Common Sense is Now Not Common!'/><author><name>Richard Day</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00496798801915696192</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='26' height='32' src='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_WCGhVZWUteE/So5Y6ivyCEI/AAAAAAAAAAg/w46pDPjIdxU/S220/Preferred+shot.jpg'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3313253345104556892.post-3533113385109460449</id><published>2009-08-21T01:23:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2009-08-21T02:22:07.336-07:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Nice People'/><title type='text'>Nice People - Is not what the world needs now!</title><content type='html'>&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nice people is not what the world really needs right now!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I realise that is an unusual thing to say however recently after enrolling in a 16 month Leadership program run by Integrity and Values I was given an insight into the concept of "Nice" and how much it costs us in terms of relationships and career opportunities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;Another meaning to the word "Nice" as it was explained to me is as follows:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;ul style="font-family: arial;"&gt;&lt;li  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;N&lt;/span&gt;othing&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;I&lt;/span&gt;n me&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;C&lt;/span&gt;ares&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;E&lt;/span&gt;nough (to tell you the truth)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:arial;font-size:100%;"  &gt;What this is in fact saying is that if you really care about someone you actually owe it to them to tell them the truth about behaviours and paradigms that may be working against them as long as you understand how to deliver the message respectfully and honestly.&lt;br /&gt;I remember Jack Welch (former CEO of General Electric) saying that the most common frustration of his in business was the fact that very few leaders actually give honest assessments of their team members during performance appraisal sessions and generally play the "nice" card which makes little difference to the daily performance of the person yet may have a significant impact on their future career aspirations.&lt;br /&gt;Take an example of someone who reguarly repeats what they say so that the information becomes boring and annoying as well as repetitive.
